Beyond the Planning Desk: When There Isn’t a Happy Ending
Some of the hardest work I do as a travel advisor happens when a trip never gets to begin.
Recently, travelers missed their cruise after problems with the assistance they needed at the airport. They hadn’t done anything wrong. The cruise supplier hadn’t caused the disruption. But the travelers were left facing the disappointment and the financial consequences.
Behind the scenes, I sent emails, made calls, explained what happened, and asked whether a refund or credit toward a future trip could be considered. I wanted to find something that would help.
After reviewing my requests, the supplier declined both a refund and a credit toward a future trip. The cancellation terms still applied, and the travelers did not have travel insurance.
That is a difficult answer to deliver after you’ve tried to find a way forward. I can advocate for my clients, but I can’t override a supplier’s cancellation policy or create insurance protection after something has happened.
People don’t always see this part of our work: the calls, the follow-ups, and the difficult conversations when plans fall apart. Sometimes, even with those efforts, we don’t get the outcome we hoped for.
That does not mean insurance would necessarily have covered this situation. Travel insurance doesn’t cover every situation. Coverage depends on the policy and the circumstances. But it deserves a conversation before you travel, while you still have the opportunity to understand your options.
When we plan your next trip, let’s talk about protecting it, too.
