At the eastern tip of Passau’s Old Town, three rivers arrive from three different directions. The Danube, Inn and Ilz meet at the Dreiflüsseeck, creating the geographic feature that earned Passau its nickname: the City of Three Rivers.

For a Danube traveler, this is more than a scenic photo stop. The confluence explains why Passau developed where it did and why the city looks the way it does.

Which Three Rivers Meet in Passau?

The three rivers are:

• Danube — flowing into Passau from the west.

• Inn — arriving from the south after flowing out of the Alpine region.

• Ilz — entering from the north.

From the Dreiflüsseeck, Passau Tourism describes the Ilz entering the Danube from the left and the Inn joining from the right.

Why Are the Rivers Different Colors?

This is the detail many visitors remember.

Passau Tourism describes the Inn as green because of its Alpine origin, the Danube as blue and the Ilz as black or very dark because it flows through moorland.

The waters do not instantly blend into one uniform color. Under suitable conditions, the different tones can remain visible downstream for a time.

Weather, sediment, light and water conditions affect what you actually see, so travelers should not expect the confluence to look identical every day.

Is the Inn Bigger Than the Danube at Passau?

This question becomes surprisingly interesting once you stand at the confluence.

Passau Tourism notes that the Inn can sometimes carry a greater volume of water, particularly during periods influenced by Alpine snowmelt and flooding. But the Danube carries more water for much of the year and has traveled farther before reaching Passau.

So the fact that the combined river continues to be called the Danube is not simply a matter of which stream looks strongest on the day you visit.

Why Did Passau Grow Here?

River junctions historically created natural transportation corridors. In Passau, three waterways converge at a narrow peninsula, producing a location with obvious strategic and commercial value.

That same geography gives modern visitors an unusually easy way to understand the city. Walk toward the eastern end of the Old Town and the streets eventually lead you to the point where the rivers meet.

Walk to the Dreiflüsseeck

For most visitors, this is the essential experience. The confluence point is at the tip of the Old Town and Passau Tourism lists it as barrier-free for wheelchair access.

Look Down From Above

An elevated viewpoint provides a completely different understanding of Passau’s geography. Veste Oberhaus, above the Danube, is one of the city’s signature viewpoints.

See It From the Water

Passau also offers a local Three Rivers sightseeing cruise. The current tourism listing describes a 45-minute route showing the cathedral, confluence, Oberhaus Castle and Mariahilf.

Why River-Cruise Travelers Should Care

When your cruise ship arrives in Passau, you are entering a city whose entire identity is tied to rivers.

Seeing the confluence gives context to everything else: the narrow Old Town, the hilltop fortifications, the cathedral skyline and Passau’s long relationship with the Danube.

Is the Three-River Confluence Worth Seeing?

Yes, particularly because it does not require committing an entire port day.
